Kumawood stars Yaw Dabo and Oboy Siki faced off in a Kumasi court yesterday over a GH¢1 million defamation suit. With Dabo’s soccer academy brand and personal reputation at stake, the court must now decide if Oboy Siki’s viral comments were harmless jokes or malicious defamation.

The long-standing friction between Kumawood actors Yaw Dabo and Oboy Siki reached a legal boiling point yesterday as both parties appeared before the Kumasi High Court. Yaw Dabo, a prominent actor and the founder of the Dabo Soccer Academy, has officially initiated a defamation lawsuit against his colleague, demanding GH¢1 million in damages. The legal action stems from a series of highly controversial and derogatory remarks made by Oboy Siki during a media interview following a football match in Yaw Dabo’s hometown earlier this year.

The dispute reportedly began over financial disagreements during the sporting event, but escalated quickly when Oboy Siki granted an interview to a local digital media outlet. In the viral footage, the veteran actor allegedly made disparaging comments regarding Yaw Dabo’s personal life, physical stature, and his ability to father children. Furthermore, Oboy Siki questioned the integrity of Dabo’s professional brand and his football academy, suggesting that the actor was "selfish" and "not man enough" for certain social responsibilities. These comments circulated widely on platforms like TikTok and WhatsApp, sparking intense debate among fans and industry stakeholders.

In court on February 23, 2026, counsel for the plaintiff, led by Lawyer Diana, argued that the defendant’s statements were not merely "jokes" or "opinions" but were calculated, malicious lies intended to destroy Yaw Dabo’s hard-earned reputation. The legal team contended that as a football administrator who deals with international partners and scouts, such defamatory remarks could jeopardize Dabo’s business interests and his standing within the global sports community. The GH¢1 million claim is intended to compensate for the psychological distress and the potential commercial loss suffered by the Dabo brand.

Oboy Siki, through his legal representatives, has previously attempted to downplay the severity of the remarks. In a public apology issued shortly after receiving the court summons in late January, the veteran actor claimed his words were spoken in a moment of anger and were meant to be humorous. He appealed to Kumawood elders, including Akwasi Antwi (popularly known as Ras Nene), to intervene and help settle the matter out of court, citing their long-standing friendship. However, the plaintiff has remained firm, indicating that a formal legal precedent must be set to discourage the use of derogatory personal attacks under the guise of entertainment.

The courtroom was packed with several Kumawood personalities who showed up to support both actors, highlighting the deep division this case has caused within the local movie industry. While some colleagues are pushing for an amicable settlement, the court has signaled its readiness to proceed with the hearing. The presiding judge has adjourned the case to a later date to allow the defense to file their formal response to the specific claims of defamation. This case remains one of the most high-profile legal battles in the Ghanaian entertainment sector this year, as it tests the boundaries of free speech and personal dignity in the digital age
