The excitement of the annual inter-school athletics competition in the Central Region has been cut short due to shocking acts of hooliganism. The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially suspended all sporting activities across senior high schools in the region with immediate effect.
The drastic directive follows a violent clash that occurred during the zonal sports festival at Agona Swedru.
The Swedru Incident
According to eyewitness reports, a disagreement between rival schools quickly escalated into a bloody brawl. During the chaos, a male student was cornered, brutally assaulted, and stoned by a group of opposing students. The victim sustained severe head injuries and had to be rushed to the Swedru Government Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command intervened swiftly, restoring order and officially arresting three students identified as the primary instigators of the assault. They are currently assisting the police with investigations.
GES Zero-Tolerance Policy
In a strongly worded memo sent to all headmasters and sports coordinators in the region, the GES condemned the barbaric act, stating that the safety of students is the ultimate priority.
The Regional Director emphasized that the suspension will remain in place until a full security review is conducted. School authorities have been tasked to fish out any other students involved in the violence to face disciplinary committees.
"Sports are meant to foster unity, discipline, and healthy competition among our youth. We will not sit unconcerned and watch it degenerate into an avenue for bloodshed and thuggery," a portion of the GES statement read.
Students across the region have expressed massive disappointment over the suspension, but authorities maintain that the ban is necessary to prevent any retaliatory attacks between the rival schools.
