The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has taken a significant step to address the power challenges plaguing the Chorkor 31st community in Accra. The completion of the new 315kVA transformer installation is a testament to the company's commitment to providing reliable power supply to its customers.

The project, which was estimated to cost GH¢ 290,000, aims to augment the existing 315kVA transformer serving customers in the area near Korle Bu in the Ablekuma South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Background: Low Voltage Power Challenges in Chorkor 31st Community

The Chorkor 31st community, like many other areas in Ghana, has struggled with low voltage power challenges for years. This has had a significant impact on the daily lives of residents, affecting their ability to engage in economic activities and access essential services.

In response to these challenges, ECG's management in the Accra West region held a stakeholder engagement with key community and opinion leaders to discuss the issues and assure them of measures to resolve the problem.

Completion of the Project and Community Response

The General Manager for ECG Accra West region, Mrs Sariel Etwire, expressed gratitude to the community members and leaders, particularly the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma South constituency, Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, for their support and collaboration during the installation process.

According to Mrs Etwire, the community's cooperation was crucial in ensuring the successful completion of the project. She urged the community to collectively ensure the safety and security of all ECG installations.

Cautions from Community Leaders

The Ablekuma South MP, Dr Vanderpuije, cautioned community members to desist from engaging in all forms of illegalities, such as illegal connections, which can lead to a rapid overload of the newly installed transformer and negate the gains of the new transformer installation.

Dr Vanderpuije urged residents to report anyone engaged in illegal connections to ECG for correction and surcharge, emphasizing that such actions will lead to long-term problems for the entire community.

Looking Ahead

The completion of the new 315kVA transformer is a significant step towards addressing the power challenges in the Chorkor 31st community. However, it is essential for ECG and the community to work together to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.

By promoting a culture of safety and security, and reporting any illegal activities, residents can help maintain the integrity of the electrical infrastructure and ensure a stable power supply for years to come.
