In a landmark judgment that has brought a somber sense of closure to the Upper West Region, the High Court in Wa has sentenced Shariff Abdulai, popularly known as "Cristos," to life imprisonment in hard labour. The sentencing, which took place on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, follows one of the most chilling serial murder investigations in Ghana's recent history. Abdulai was convicted for the murder of Isah Yahaya and twenty-two (22) others, ending a reign of terror that spanned multiple districts.
The court proceedings revealed the staggering scale of the convict's crimes. Shariff Abdulai pleaded guilty simpliciter to the charges, admitting to a total of 23 killings across the northern belt. The breakdown of his victims includes:
• 16 people in Wa
• 5 people in Bole
• 1 person in Banda Nkwanta
• 1 person in Bamboi
Abdulai’s arrest on October 6, 2025, was the result of sustained, intelligence-led operations by the Ghana Police Service after a string of mysterious disappearances and deaths had gripped the Wa municipality with fear. Following his committal from the District Magistrate Court, he was arraigned before His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi at the High Court. Despite being represented by counsel, the convict chose to confess to the full extent of his atrocities, leading to the immediate imposition of the maximum sentence.

The presiding judge ordered that the convict serve his life sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. In an official statement signed by the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. Francis Yiribaare, the Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring a secure atmosphere for all law-abiding citizens. While the life sentence ensures that "Cristos" will never again walk free, the sheer number of lives lost remains a painful scar on the communities of Wa and Bole.
