The UG Stadium will host the 2026 Independence Day National Run this Saturday, March 7. Dubbed the "Rep Your Ghana Colours" edition, the 5km and 10km event aims to unite a million Ghanaians through fitness just days before the 69th Independence anniversary.

The University of Ghana (UG) Sports Stadium in Legon is set to be the center of national pride this Saturday, March 7, 2026, as it hosts the finish line for the 2026 Independence Day National Run. Organized by the Millennium Marathon Sports Company in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the event is themed the "Rep Your Ghana Colours" edition. This year’s run carries extra weight as a patriotic build-up to the Black Stars’ upcoming participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico this June.

The event, which follows the official 69th Independence Day celebrations on Friday, March 6, is designed as a mass mobilization effort to promote national unity, health, and wellness. Participants will compete in simultaneous 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre runs and walks, starting at 6:30 AM. According to the Race Director, Catherine Morton, the initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of using sports as a tool for community engagement. Organizers have set an ambitious goal of mobilizing over one million Ghanaians across the country, with each region holding its own synchronized event under the same national banner.

Publicity and Communications Manager Ernest Buamah has confirmed that while registration officially concluded at the end of February, the "spirit of the run" is open to everyone. Participants who registered by dialing *800*17# are currently picking up their race packs from the UG Stadium, with distribution continuing until Friday evening. To add to the festive atmosphere, the climax at the Legon Stadium will feature live musical performances, fun games, and a royal presence, as traditional authorities and fitness clubs join the student body and corporate leaders on the track.

The 2026 edition is being hailed as a "new national tradition" that shifts the focus of Independence Day from traditional parades and speeches to active, collective participation. Every participant who crosses the finish line at the UG Stadium will be awarded a commemorative medal, while top performers in the competitive categories will receive special prizes from sponsors, including the KGL Group and the National Sports Authority (NSA). With the country already in a festive mood following the "Building Prosperity" themed national parade at Jubilee House, the Saturday run is expected to be the ultimate energetic wrap-up to the holiday weekend.
