The violent clash at the Agona Swedru District Athletics Games has taken a legal turn. Police have officially arrested three individuals in connection with the stoning and assault of an Obrachire SHTS student, who has now been discharged from the hospital.

There is a major update regarding the violent incident that marred the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service (GES) have moved swiftly to address the assault on a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School.

The Arrests & Investigation

The Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Juliette Dufie Otami, confirmed today, Monday, February 23, that three individuals have been arrested as of yesterday. The police are currently interrogating the suspects to determine the extent of their involvement in the clash between Obrachire SHTS and the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

In a statement issued on social media, the Ghana Police Service condemned the "hooliganism" in the strongest terms, assuring the public that all perpetrators captured in the viral footage will be brought to justice.

Health Update on the Victim

The student, who was allegedly pelted with stones and beaten with sticks by a group of rival students, was rushed to a health facility in critical condition last Thursday. Dr. Dufie Otami provided a positive update, stating that the victim has been successfully treated and discharged. He has since been returned to the school and is reportedly doing well.

Wider Crisis in SHS Sports

This incident is part of a worrying spike in campus violence across Ghana in early 2026.

• Eastern Region: GES recently condemned a stabbing and an alleged gang-rape during the Super Zonal Games.

• Sanctions: Schools like Koforidua SHTS and New Juaben SHS have already faced two-year bans from sports and cadetting due to similar misconduct.

• Nkawie SHS: In the Ashanti Region, Nkawie SHTS has been handed a massive two-year ban from all extracurricular activities until 2028 for initiating attacks on other schools.

Authorities are now facing mounting pressure to modernize security approaches at inter-school competitions to prevent further bloodshed.
